Diarmuid Kirwan will feel today's game. James Crombie/INPHO

Referee Diarmuid Kirwan paid for getting a little too close to action this afternoon

This hurt. It looks funny, but it still hurt.

AT FIRST IT looked as if referee Diarmuid Kirwan just fell over after throwing the ball in to start the second half of Kilkenny’s demolition of Wexford in the Leinster SHC semi-final this afternoon.

However, as the replays show, while Kirwan attempted to  backtrack at speed, he appeared to be caught by the hurley of Michael Fennelly, causing him to hit the deck.

Co-commentator Anthony Daly found the whole thing hilarious, but Kirwan was hobbling for some time afterwards.
